About Kizamu

Kizamu is a metronome and real-time tempo detection app for iOS. It listens through your device microphone to detect the BPM of live music or a drummer in the room, and shows a confidence indicator so you can tell when the reading is reliable. It also works as a standalone precision metronome with tap tempo, subdivisions, and half-time and double-time modes.

FAQ

Why is the indicator showing gray and not locking onto a tempo?

Gray means Kizamu is still listening and building confidence. It needs a few seconds of steady, rhythmic audio to lock on, and very quiet sources, complex arrangements, or a signal that is just starting up can take a little longer. If it stays gray, try moving the device closer to the sound source.

Why is it showing half or double the tempo I expect?

This is normal and comes down to interpretation. A drummer playing at 120 BPM and a drummer playing at 60 BPM with twice as many notes can look similar to a detection engine. Use the half-time or double-time buttons to shift the reading up or down to the feel you want, and Kizamu will hold that interpretation once you set it.

Does Kizamu record or store my audio?

No. Kizamu processes audio in real time entirely on your device and discards it immediately, and nothing is recorded, saved, or sent anywhere. The microphone is only active while the detector is running.

Does it work with Bluetooth headphones or speakers?

The metronome click works with any audio output, including Bluetooth. For tempo detection, Kizamu uses the device microphone to listen to the room, so Bluetooth headphones or speakers do not affect what it hears. Make sure your device is close enough to the sound source.

What is the diagnostics view for?

The diagnostics view shows the internal state of the detection engine in real time, including the rhythmic energy it is picking up and how strongly it believes in the current tempo. It is mainly for curious users and musicians who want to understand what the app is hearing. You do not need it for normal use.

The tempo locked but then unlocked during a drum fill or quiet section — is that a bug?

Not usually. Drum fills, pauses, and quieter sections can temporarily make the pulse less clear, so Kizamu may drop confidence and keep listening until the beat is steady again. If it happens often, try moving the device closer to the sound source or choosing a more consistent part of the groove.
